WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team scored eight goals against American in an 8-0 shutout victory at Kentner Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The eight goals marks the highest goal total this season for the Deacs. Junior forward Jennie Shelton put the Deacs on the board early, with two quick strikes past American goalkeeper Lauren McDonnell. Shelton took a cross from sophomore Heather Aughinbaugh at the 21:12 mark to put Wake ahead 1-0. She then took a ball from senior forward Jenny Everett with just over 18 minutes remaining in the half and slid it in the back corner of the cage.
Everett struck next, this time on a penalty stroke - the only stroke of the game - at the 7:39 mark in the first half. Shelton completed her hat trick with another goal three minutes later. Sophomore Maria Whitehead transferred the ball to Shelton in front of the cage for an easy score and a 4-0 lead by the Deacs. Everett wrapped up the first half with her second goal - an unassisted shot with two and a half minutes to go to put Wake Forest on top 5-0 at halftime.
Freshman Katie Ackerman scored her second goal this season off a pass from Everett. Everett completed her hat trick at the 16:37 mark off a penalty corner shot into the upper left net of the goal. She took passes from Ackerman and Whitehead to give the Deacons a 7-0 advantage. Wake's offensive attack could not be stifled even in the waning moments of the game. Sophomore Marlena Reese capped the Deacon scoring effort, blasting the ball from 10 yards out with nine minutes remaining in the game.
"We came out a little flat today, but we amended that very quickly. We were trying too much individually and I think we recognized we had to combine our efforts to be successful today," head coach Jen Averill said. "We wanted to continue to use the tactics that we utilized in our game yesterday (against Michigan). We need to first respect our opponent and then play accordingly. Jennie Shelton had a quick start against American in our game last year and she got started quickly today."
All players on both teams saw action in the game. The Deacs recorded 29 shots on goal, while giving up only five shots to American. Senior goalkeeper Jaime Tressler, who gave way to freshman goalie Katie Ridd in the second half, added four saves. McDonnell registered 12 saves in the first half of play for the Eagles.
Wake Forest improves to 13-2 overall, while American drops to 7-6. The Deacons will travel to Charlottesville, VA October 22 to take on Virginia in the team's final conference game this season.
