WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Two Wake Forest women's track athletes have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be held March 30-June 4 at Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
Seniors Janelle Kraus and Jill Snyder each qualified for the national event in the 5,000-meter run and 1,500-meter run, respectively. Kraus' qualifying time of 16:09.41 was ninth-best among collegiate athletes in the nation. She automatically qualified for the event at the Duke Invitational April 7. Snyder provisionally qualified at the Stanford Invitational, running a 4:22.05 time. She will enter the national race listed as 15th-best.
Kraus, who competed in both the NCAA Cross Country Championships and the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this year, will be making her third straight appearance in the outdoor meet. Snyder will participate in her second consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Kraus and Snyder both qualified in the same events a year ago. Kraus placed 12th in 1999 with a time of 17:04.78. She's been named an All-American three times since coming to Wake Forest in 1996. Snyder was named an All-American for the second time in her career after finishing the 1,500-meter race in 13th position. "We're really excited to give Janelle and Jill, as seniors, one more opportunity to compete nationally and earn All-American status," said head coach Annie Bennett. "They're both ready to step up on the podium after the races."
