DURHAM, NC - Senior Janelle Kraus, who was Wake Forest's only automatic qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, placed 7th in the 5,000-meter run tonight to earn All-America honors at the championships at Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium.
Kraus, who finished the race in 16:17.32, earned spots in all three NCAA track events this season, running in both the cross country and indoor track events as well. She has now been named an All-American four times since coming to Wake Forest, and placed 12th in the 5,000-meter event at the NCAA's last season.
"I was really happy with how I finished, and I really wanted to make sure that I got on the podium," Kraus said. "I went into the race really relaxed, and I think that helped me to stay out of the big mess in the front group. Being named an All-American is definitely a goal of everyone here - it's a very prestigious title."
She qualified for the race at the Duke Invitational, also held at Wallace Wade Stadium, finishing in 16:09.41 in the April 7 meet. Prior to tonight's race, Kraus' time was ninth-best in the nation among collegiate athletes.
"I'm very pleased with how she ran. It was a hard night to run - the air was heavy and it was hot," head coach Annie Bennett said. I wanted her to keep tight in the pack, and that's what she did. I'm very excited for her."
