WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest field hockey team will match up against the Michigan State Spartans Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm at Kentner Stadium. The game is the first of the 2000 season for both squads.
The Deacons are coming off their most successful season in school history, posting a record of 18-4 and gaining a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. Wake went undefeated against non-conference opponents during the 1999 regular season and lost only to Michigan in double overtime in the NCAA Quarterfinal round.
The '99 Deacs were ranked as high as No. 3 nationally and head coach Jennifer Averill was named ACC Coach of the Year as well as the NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year. Michigan State compiled a 9-12 overall record last season.
Wake's lineup features first team All-American senior forward/midfielder Jenny Everett, who also earned All-ACC and Regional All-American honors a season ago. Everett led the team in scoring with 62 points, a Wake Forest record, and now has 124 career points, also a school record. Junior forward Jennie Shelton also returns after being named to the South Region All-Region squad last season.
The Deacon home schedule is highlighted by a rematch with Michigan October 14 and games against traditional ACC rivals Maryland, Duke and North Carolina.
