WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team stopped the Radford Highlanders in their tracks with a 7-0 win at Kentner Stadium Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Deacons improve to 6-0 overall.

The Deacons' attack sent a barrage of shots past Radford's defense, which was unable to contain the Wake offensive pressure. Junior forward Jemima Cameron put the Deacons on the board with 22:19 remaining in the first half.

Cameron took a cross from sophomore Maria Whitehead and put the ball past Radford goalkeeper Brooke Peterson what would prove to be the game-winner. Although Wake Forest began the game slowly, the Deacs scored again two and a half minutes later. Cameron struck once again - this time taking the pass from senior forward Jenny Everett and knocking it underneath Peterson. As the first-half buzzer sounded, sophomore Marlena Reese scored the third goal of the half for Wake when Kelly Doton chipped the ball into the circle to the crossing Reese. In the first half alone, Peterson recorded 17 saves for the Highlanders.

Doton picked up the second half where she left off in the first, scoring an unassisted goal with just over two minutes gone in the half. She would score again with 16:31 remaining to finish the game with five points. Sophomore Heather Aughinbaugh scored her second goal of the season - an unassisted shot with under 25 minutes left in the game. Whitehead added her name into the goal column, scoring off a penalty stroke at the 18:11 mark. Doton's second goal sealed the game's final 7-0 score.

Wake goalie Jaime Tressler recorded six saves, while Peterson saved 21 for Radford. Doton and Cameron each had seven shots on goal and both scored twice in the contest.

"Our defense needs to be tested so that we'll be better prepared for our bigger games this season," head coach Jen Averill said. "Our backfield is playing a lot of attacks for us and we need to be as aggressive on defense as we are on our attack."

The Deacons will entertain Davidson at Kentner Stadium September 17 at 3:00 pm before opening the conference season against Duke on September 20. That game, however, will not count in the league standings.
