Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem, NC - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team cracked top-ranked Maryland's 29-game winning streak with a 5-3 victory over the Terps at Kentner Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Wake's Heather Aughinbaugh struck first within the first minute of action - an unassisted shot to the back of the goal. Maryland's Dina Rizzo tied the game six minutes later, taking a cross from Carla Tagliente to tie the score at 1-1. Junior forward Jennie Shelton put the Deacons ahead once again, taking a pass from junior Jemima Cameron and chipping the ball past Terrapin goalkeeper Ashley Hohnstine for a 2-1 advantage.

Tagliente knotted the score at 2-2 as Rachel Hiskins tipped the ball into the circle for a transition goal at 17:08. With the goal and assist, Tagliente set Maryland career scoring and goal records. Maryland opened up the second half with a goal from Angie Klingerman, who had checked into the game seconds earlier. She took a pass from Caroline Walter with six minutes elapsed in the second half to give the Terps their only lead of the game - a 3-2 advantage over the Deacs.

Wake scored the next three goals, wrapping up their ninth win of the season. Shelton netted her second goal of the game, an unassisted shot on a breakaway. Cameron scored Wake's fourth goal off a penalty corner shot. Senior forward Jenny Everett took the penalty corner, while sophomore forward Maria Whitehead stopped the ball for Cameron. Freshman forward Kelly Doton capped the scoring for Wake, sealing the win with an unassisted goal at the 7:33 mark.

Senior goalkeeper Jaime Tressler, who played the entire game for Wake, came up with 10 saves. Maryland's Hohnstine saved seven balls. The Deacs were awarded the only penalty stroke of the game, but Everett was unable to capitalize.

"I'm really proud of the kids. The coaching staff came up with a game plan, and the kids stuck to it and executed it well. My hat's off to them," head coach Jen Averill said. "The game was a fight. They're (Maryland) such a great tactical and technical team and I knew we had to change it up throughout the game. Our whole focus was that when the momentum or lead changed, we needed to battle back little by little to get it back."

Wake Forest improves to 9-0 and 1-0 in ACC play and will travel to North Carolina September 30 for the team's second conference game.
