ST. LOUIS - The Wake Forest field hockey team earned its second win of the 2000 season with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Iowa on the first day of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in St. Louis.
The Deacons trailed 1-0 before scoring two unanswered goals in the last 20 minutes of the game to seal the win. After a scoreless first half in blistering heat, Iowa's Maria Merluzzi put the Hawkeyes on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal inside the circle with 19:36 remaining in the contest. It marked the first goal the Deacons have given up this season.
Wake Forest junior forward/midfielder Jenny Everett then scored two goals to put the Hawkeyes away for good. Her penalty stroke at 16:45 left in the second half knotted the score at 1-1. Everett then blasted what proved to be the game-winning shot past Iowa goalkeeper Saleema Rogers with just over five minutes to go.
"We played great in the first half. We were extremely aggressive both on our attacks and on defense," head coach Jen Averill said. "I was really pleased with the individuals that came off the bench for us - they were all key contributors to the game. We're used to scoring when we have as many shots as we did, but Iowa played well."
The Deacons outshot the Hawkeyes 26 to 6, and held Iowa to only two shots in the second half. Wake earned 10 penalty corners, while giving up only five. Rogers registered 22 saves for the Hawkeyes and senior goalkeeper Jaime Tressler recorded four in the matchup.
Wake, who will face Northwestern at 12:00 on the second day of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in St. Louis, improves its record to 2-0 on the season.
