Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team defeated the Duke Blue Devils tonight at Kentner Stadium by a score of 4-3. The game did not count towards either team's ACC records. The Demon Deacons, who are now the number one team in the nation, improve to 8-3 (1-1 ACC), while the 14th-ranked Blue Devils fall to 7-5 (0-2 ACC).
The Deacons charged out early, scoring three goals in the first 6:05 of the game. At 31:11 of the first half, senior forward Jennie Shelton took the ball and sprinted down the right side of the field towards the goal. After forcing the goalkeeper out of position, Shelton fed sophomore Kelly Doton who fired it into the net to open the scoring. Less than a minute and a half later, junior forward Heather Aughinbaugh collected the ball to the left of the net and punched it in to put the Deacons up 2-0. Less than one minute after that, Shelton collected her second assist of the half when she found freshman forward Kelly Dostal who deposited the ball in the goal to give the Deacons a 3-0 lead with 28:55 remaining in the half. After a Duke timeout, the tempo evened out, and Duke got on the board when junior Chrissy Ashley scored with 13:54 remaining. The teams went into halftime with Wake Forest up 3-1.
The Deacons came out quickly in the second half as well when senior midfielder Jemima Cameron scored off a penalty corner with an assist from Dostal to put Wake Forest up 4-1. The momentum shifted after that. Duke inched closer at 18:02 of the second when sophomore Stacey Tsougas took a feed from Angie North and scored. Ten minutes later, the Blue Devils struck again when Liz Bateman scored off a penalty corner to make the score 4-3. Duke continued to attack, earning three penalty corners in the last five minutes, but the Deacon defense held and Wake Forest earned the victory.
Demon Deacon head coach Jennifer Averill was glad to come away with the victory. "When we were on, we played brilliant hockey, but when were bad, we were really bad," Averill said. "We have to play more consistently against our ACC opponents, but hats off to Duke. They took charge and took advantage when we were flat. Still, good teams find a way to win and we'll take it."
The Deacons will be on the road on October 17 when they travel to Boone to take on Appalachian State. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
