Winston-Salem, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team avoided an upset tonight, earning a 3-2 overtime victory over 15th-ranked Duke in its final ACC contest of the season. With their eighth consecutive win, the Deacons move to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, which guarantees them a tie for the best season record in the conference. The Blue Devils fall to 9-7 (0-3 ACC).
True to form, the Deacons struck first. With 26:35 remaining in the first half, sophomore Kelly Doton took a pass from freshman Lucy Shaw and found the back of the net. Just four minutes later, senior Jennie Shelton tallied for Wake Forest to give the Deacs the early 2-0 lead. The Blue Devils cut the lead in half when Chrissy Murphy scored with 15:19 to play in the half.
The first 20 minutes of the second half featured scoreless hockey until Murphy added her second goal of the game, sweeping the ball from under Wake Forest goalkeeper Katie Ridd and into the goal. When the horn sounded to end regulation, the teams were knotted at 2-2.
With just over 12 minutes remaining in overtime, it appeared that the Blue Devils had sealed the upset when Kim Susko chipped one into the net from nine yards out. As the Blue Devils stormed the field, the goal was waved off by the umpire and play resumed. Less than two minutes later, juniors Heather Aughinbaugh and Maria Whitehead set up a penalty corner for Doton and the sophomore deposited the ball into the goal for the second time in the game to give the Deacons the 3-2 victory.
Ridd made two saves in the win, while Duke keeper Hallie Smith recorded 10. The Deacons outshot the Blue Devils, 13-4.
Wake Forest gets little time to rest this week, as they will be back in action at home on Thursday when the Davidson Wildcats visit Kentner Stadium at 7 p.m. The Demon Deacons will close out the regular season at home on Sunday against Pacific. That game will begin at 2 p.m.
