Winston-Salem, N.C. - On a day on which seniors Jemima Cameron, Katie Kubic and Jennie Shelton were honored, the third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team wrapped up their regular season with a 10-0 victory over the University of the Pacific Tigers. The win gives the Deacons a regular season record of 13-3 (3-1 ACC), while Pacific falls to 3-9 (2-4 NorPac).
The Deacons set the tone early, scoring five goals in the first 20 minutes. Less than a minute into the game, junior Heather Aughinbaugh collected a rebound and scored to give the Deacons the lead. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Kelly Doton followed suit, also scoring off a rebound. Freshman Kelly Dostal got in on the scoring with 26:49 remaining in the first half when she took a feed from Shelton and put it in the net. With 17:22 remaining, Doton scored on a penalty stroke to put the Deacons up, 4-0. Twenty minutes in, Cameron fed Shelton off a penalty corner for the fifth Deacon goal. Cameron then chalked up a goal of her own when she got an assist from Doton and found the goal. Cameron did not stop there, as she found junior Marlena Reese, who put the ball in the goal to give the Deacs a 7-0 halftime lead.
With 27:45 to play in the game, Shelton struck again, getting a pass from Dostal and scoring her second goal of the game. Just over a minute later, Aughinbaugh scored another unassisted goal to put Wake Forest up 9-0 and then with 2:04 to play in the game, junior Carrie Neidhart finished things off, scoring off a penalty corner set up by junior Maria Whitehead and sophomore Katie Ackerman.
Wake Forest goalkeepers Katie Ridd and Merrilee Robbins made five saves in the loss, while Pacific's Gina Sadler made 22 in the loss. The Deacons outshot the Tigers, 47-8.
Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill was encouraged by her team's play. "We came out extremely strong," said Averill. "We played well and we executed during the first five minutes and that determined the pace of the game. It was great to see all of our players out there contributing and executing."
The postseason begins this Thursday with the ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill, but Wake Forest will not play until Friday. The matchups are to be announced.
