Wake Forest announced today that Tom Fish has been hired as an assistant coach for the men's and women's track & field teams. A two-time All-American at the University of Nebraska, Fish will serve under Wake Forest Director of Track & Field, Annie Schweitzer Bennett, as the Demon Deacons' sprint coach.
"We are excited to have Tom on board," said Bennett. "He brings experience from the Big 12, where he was part of the powerhouse Nebraska sprint core. We feel that he is going to bring more depth to our coaching staff."
Fish comes to Wake Forest from Wichita State University, where he spent last year as the assistant sprint coach and academic liaison for the Shockers' track & field teams. Prior to his stint in Wichita, Fish served as a volunteer coach at the University of Nebraska for the 2000 track & field season, where he worked primarily with the 'Husker sprinters.
While in Lincoln, Fish helped Nebraska win men's and women's indoor and outdoor Big 12 Championships. He coached two NCAA indoor national qualifiers in the 60-Meter Dash and the 200-Meter Dash and saw his 200-Meter Dash pupil earn All-American honors. Under Fish's watch, 'Husker sprinters broke school records in the outdoor 100-Meter Dash and 200-Meter Dash and won Big 12 Championships in the indoor 60-Meter Dash and 200-Meter Dash - in school and conference record-breaking times.
A two-time All-American in the 200-Meter Dash at Nebraska, Fish broke the school record in the 200-Meter Dash in 1997 and still holds 4x100-Meter Relay record he helped set in 1994. A member of Nebraska's Captain's Counsel from 1996-97, Fish was the recipient of the team's Peak Performer Award in 1997 and earned the Most Improved Award the year before. Fish transferred to the University of Iowa after four years at Nebraska and graduated from Iowa in 2001 with a B.A. in History. His wife, Jill, is a resident physician in Greenville, NC.
