Track Teams Begin Outdoor Season

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Wake Forest University men's and women's track & field team began the outdoor season this weekend with some strong individual performances. Both teams competed Friday and Saturday at the 49er Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, and the women's team also sent a couple of heptathletes to the Texas A&M Multi-Event, hosted by Texas A&M University in College Station, TX.
Jamie Grayzer and Rachel Burns made the trip to Texas and both competed in the Heptathlon. Grayzer took fourth place with 4,487 points and Burns placed 21st with 3,717 points.
Meanwhile in Charlotte, Courtney Lancashire won the 3,000-Meter Run with a time of 10:03.65. Four Demon Deacons finished in the top ten in the Women's 800-Meter Run. Summer Shaw was the runner-up with a time of 2:12.96. Shauna Danos placed fifth with a 2:15.71, Kara Mullin took seventh place with a 2:18.16 and Catherine Fortin-Major ran a 2:18.80 to finish in tenth place. Denise Hefferin raced to a third place finish in the 5,000-Meter Run with a time of 18:03.03. Kara Mullin led the Deacs in the 1,500-Meter Run placing sixth with a time of 4:40.99. Liz Washam cleared 3.05 Meters in the Pole Vault to finish sixth and tossed 22.94 Meters in the Javelin Throw for 14th place. Detra Chambers leaped 4.47 Meters in the Long Jump to take 20th place and Sandra Jenkins tossed a career best 35.2 Meters in the Discus Throw for 11th place.
Patrick Ladapo tied for 11th in the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 10.97 and placed 12th in the 200-Meter Dash with a 22.21. Matt Udvari led the Demon Deacons in the 400-Meter Dash with a career best 49.98. Josh Buffolino ran a 4:02.89 in the 1,500-Meter Run to finish 15th. Four Demon Deacons finished in the top ten of the 5,000-Meter Run. Ed Acosta ran a career best 14:31.78 to take runner-up honors, Sean Nagorny finished fourth with a career best 14:40.65, Garick Hill took fifth with an outdoor career best 14:42.21 and Dave Barrett placed tenth with a career best 14:59.86. J.T. Kuretich ran a 14.94 in the preliminaries of the 110-Meter High Hurdles to qualify for the finals, where he took eighth place. Jeong-Hwan Kang won the High Jump, clearing 2.03 Meters and Zach Hamilton cleared 4.40 Meters in the Pole Vault to place third Matt Udvari jumped 6.55 Meters to finish 11th in the Long Jump and T.J. Thompson took eighth place in the Triple Jump with a 13.10 Meters. Da'Vaughn Mellerson tossed a 15.07 Meters to finish fifth in the Shot Put and took seventh in the Discus Throw with a distance of 40.60 Meters. Cliff Neal placed fourth in the Hammer Throw with a throw of 54.35 Meters and Alan Susi was the runner-up in the Javelin Throw, throwing a distance of 55.80 Meters.
The Demon Deacons will return to action this weekend as Wake Forest hosts the Wake Forest Relays Friday, March 23-24, at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.
