Women's Track Welcomes Incoming Class

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The Wake Forest women's track & field team welcomes the addition of five student-athletes to next year's squad. Theresa Fath, Danielle Coon, Jennifer Leesman and Jill Miller have all signed letters of intent and Anne Bersagel has accepted the annual Graylyn academic scholarship given by Wake Forest.
"This recruiting class, along with last year, helps us because it will fill positions that are vacant now due to graduation," said Wake Forest head coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett. "Our expectations are high out of our young team. We plan on attending the NCAA Cross Country Championships as well as the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships with many of these freshman."
Fath, a senior cross-country and middle distance runner at Bellport High in Brookhaven, NY, was the 2001 Indoor State Federation Champion in the outdoor 1500-Meter Run as well as the 4x800-Meter Relay. She placed third at the prestigious Melrose Games in the High School Mile Run. The Runner Up in the 1500-Meter Run at the 2000 State Championships, Fath was also the Runner Up in the 800-Meter Run at the 1999 State Championships. She captured a pair of third place finishes in the 1500-Meter Run and the 4x800-Meter Relay at the 2001 National Scholastic Indoor Championships. Her top time in the 800-Meter Run is 2:12 and her best in the 1500-Meter Run is 4:35.
Coon, a senior cross-country and distance runner at Saratoga Springs High in Saratoga Springs, NY, was the 2000 Cross-Country Class A State Champion. A member of the 2000 High School Cross-Country National Championship team, Coon took fourth place in the 2000 Cross-Country New York Federation Meet. Her top time in the 3000-Meter Run is 9:54 and her best in the 1500-Meter Run is 4:35.
Leesman, a senior thrower at Mother of Mercy High in Cincinnati, OH, took sixth place in the Shot Put at the 2001 Nike Indoor National Meet. Taking eighth place in the Shot Put at the 2000 Footlocker National High School Meet, Leesman finished in fifth place in the Shot Put at the 2000 State Championships. Her top mark in the Shot Put is 43?7" and her best in the Discus Throw is 130?. Leesman will probably also compete in the Javelin Throw as a Demon Deacon.
Miller, a senior cross-country and middle distance runner at Coffman High in Dublin, OH, took fourth place in the 2000 Cross-Country State Championship. She also took fourth place in the Mile Run at the 2000 Outdoor Track & Field State Championships. Miller?s best time in the Mile Run is 4:57, her top time in the 5,000-Meter Run is 18:04 and her best in the 800-Meter Run is 2:18.
Bersagel, a senior cross-country and distance runner at Central High in Greeley, CO, led her cross-country team to the 2000 State Championship. The Runner Up individually at the 2000 Cross Country State Championship, Bersagel was the State Champion in the 1600-Meter Run and the Runner-Up in the 3200-Meter Run at the 2000 Outdoor Track & Field State Championships. Her top time in the 1600-Meter Run is 4:59, her best in the 3200-Meter Run is 11:14 and she?s run a 18:32 in the 5,000-Meter Run. Bersagel, who was the 2000 Academic Decathlon State Champion, has accepted a full academic scholarship at Wake Forest and will be a member of the cross-country and track & field teams for the Demon Deacons.
