
Burns Named Academic All-District

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Rachel Burns, a member of the Wake Forest women's track and field team, was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District III Team on Tuesday. Burns, a junior heptathlete from Union, SC, is a Biology major with a 3.97 GPA. She is also nominated now for the Verizon Academic All-America Team, which will be chosen June 14.
"Rachel is just an excellent example of a student-athlete," said Wake Forest head coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett. "Her work ethic carries off the field and into the classroom. We are very proud of her."
Burns, the school record holder in the indoor Long Jump, reached 16'9 " at the 2001 Kroger Invitational. Her season highs from this outdoor season include 4,008 points in the Heptathlon, 81'11" in the Javelin Throw, 29'1 " in the Shot Put, 16'7 " in the Long Jump, 5'2 " in the High Jump, 2:34.78 in the 800-Meter Run, 26.93 in the 200-Meter Dash. Burns cleared 5'4 " in the High Jump, the team's best mark of the season, at the ACC Indoor Championships.
A member of the Dean's List, Burns is also an ACC Honor Roll member. Her lowest grade at Wake Forest is an A-. She placed in the Top 10 in the Heptathlon at the 2001 Florida Relays, tied for third place in the High Jump at the 2001 Yellow Jacket Invitational and took fourth place in the 100-Meter Hurdles at the 2001 Wake Forest Relays.
