Green Earns Spot On Junior National Team

RICHMOND, VA. -- Nikeya Green, a member of the Wake Forest women's track and field team, took second place in the 800-Meter Run at the 2001 USA Track & Field Junior National Championships Saturday at the University of Richmond, earning Verizon Junior All-America honors and a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team that will compete at the Great Britain Dual Meet August 18 in Staffordshire, Scotland and the Junior Pan-American Championships October 18-20 in Santa Fe, Argentina. Green, a Woodbridge, VA native who just completed her freshman year at Wake Forest, finished the race with a time of 2:08.86 She will run the 800-Meter Run for the U.S. Junior National Team in Scotland, but probably will not choose to compete in Argentina this October.
Green, who earned All-American honors during the indoor season as the third leg of the Demon Deacon Distance Medley Relay team that took fourth place at the NCAA Championships, broke school records in the indoor Distance Medley Relay, 500-Meter Run and both the indoor and outdoor 4x400-Meter Relays. Her career best time in the outdoor 800-Meter Run is 2:07.14, which she ran May 19 at the 2001 Georgia Tech Invitational.
Also running at the U.S. Junior National Meet this weekend were Wake Forest freshmen Carol Merritt and Kara Mullin. Mullin earned Verizon Junior All-America honors by finishing seventh place in the 3,000-Meter Run with a time of 10:22.27. Merritt ran a 24.73 to finish 11th in the preliminaries of the 200-Meter Dash and a 57.73 to finish 17th in the preliminaries of the 400-Meter Dash.
Sara Day, a three-time All-American from Winston-Salem, NC who just finished her senior year at Wake Forest with a runner-up finish in the 10,000-Meter Run at the NCAA Championships, will compete in the 10K at the U.S. Senior Nationals this weekend in Eugene, OR. If she finishes as one of the top two collegians, she will earn a spot on the U.S. National Team.
