BEIJING, China - Wake Forest distance legends, Sara Day and Janelle Kraus, competed Monday evening in the 10,000-Meter Run at the World University Games in Beijing, China. Day took fifth place with a career best time 33:25.45 and Kraus finished 10th with 34:25.08.
Day, a Winston-Salem, NC, native, graduated from Wake Forest this past spring after competing for the Demon Deacon cross country and track & field teams for the last two seasons. The three-time All-American was the first collegian to cross the finish line in the 10,000-Meter Run at the U.S. Championships earlier this summer in Eugene, OR, earning a spot on the National Team going to the World University Games. Prior to the 1999-2000 academic year, Day transferred to Wake Forest from High Point University, where she was the 1999 Big South Conference champion in both the 5,000-Meter Run and the 10,000-Meter Run. Her senior year, Day was the runner-up at the ACC Cross Country Championship and led the Demon Deacons to a 29th place finish at the NCAA Championship. Last spring, Day won ACC Championships in the indoor 3,000-Meter Run and the indoor 5,000-Meter Run. She earned All-American honors in the indoor 3,000-Meter Run, the Distance Medley Relay and the 10,000-Meter Run, which she was the runner-up in.
Kraus, a Shelter Island, NY native, graduated from Wake Forest this past spring after competing for the Demon Deacon cross country and track & field teams from 1996-2000. The most highly decorated athlete in Wake Forest history, Kraus finished her collegiate career as a five-time All-American, eight-time all-ACC selection and a three-time Marge Crisp Wake Forest Female Athlete of the Year honoree. She won nine ACC Championships, including five in outdoor track, two indoors and two cross country championships. Kraus earned All-American honors three straight years in cross country and was then named an All-American in both in the indoor and outdoor 5,000-Meter Run in 2000. A two-time Dean's List member at Wake Forest, Kraus was also a member of the ACC Honor Roll.
