Five Field Hockey Players Receive NFHCA Regional Honors

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) released its 2002 Division I All-Region teams and five Demon Deacons were recognized. Senior Heather Aughinbaugh, juniors Kelly Doton and Lucy Shaw, and sophomore Kelly Dostal were all named to the All-South Region first team, while senior Maria Whitehead was selected to the second team. All five players were honored as All-ACC selections for their performance this year.
Aughinbaugh, a midfielder from Denver, Pa., is a three-time All-Region selection and this year marks the second in a row that she has made the first team. Last season, she was also chosen as a second team National All-American. She is also a three-time All-ACC selection.
This marks the second consecutive first-team All-Region selection for Doton, a midfielder from Greenfield, Mass. She was named 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and is a two-time All-ACC selection. Last season, she was a second team National All-American.
Shaw, a back from Vancouver, British Columbia, was a second team All-Region selection in 2001 and was also named to the All-ACC Tournament team. This year, she was named to the All-ACC squad for the first time in her career.
This is the first regional honor for Dostal, the ACC's leading scorer. The forward/midfielder from Hatfield, Mass. received her first All-ACC selection this season.
Whitehead, a midfielder from West Chester, Pa., is receiving her second All-Region selection, as she was also named to the second team in 2000. She is second on the Wake Forest career assists list with 40. This season, she was named All-ACC for the second consecutive year.
The Demon Deacons, though, are not concerned with individual honors at the moment, as they are preparing for their run at a national championship. The Deacs will travel to the University of Louisville to take on the Michigan State Spartans in the NCAA Semifinals. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
