Wake Forest Track Starts Outdoor Season

The Wake Forest men's and women's track & field teams got the outdoor season underway this weekend as the Demon Deacons split up over three meets. Jill Kovalcik competed in the heptathlon at the Texas A&M Multi-Event Festival in College Station, TX and a few other Deacs competed in the College Station Relays, also at Texas A&M, while a majority of the others saw action at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, NC.
COLLEGE STATION, TX - Kovalcik finished 11th in the Women's Heptathlon Bronze with a score of 4296. Adralyn Wendel placed third in the 800m with a time of 2:20.53 and ran a 4:49.35 in the 1,500m to finish sixth. Jill Keating ran a 2:29.42 to take ninth in the 800m and placed 10th in the 1,500m with a time of 4:59.57. Risa Rutland captured fifth place in the 5,000m with a time of 18:08.36. Sandra Jenkins placed eighth in the shot put with a mark of 43-11.25 and 17th in the discus throw with a mark of 121-1.
On the men's side, Cliff Neal picked up third place in the hammer throw with a mark of 188-6. Alan Susi placed 10th in the javelin throw with a mark of 190-6. Susi also finished 19th in the discus throw with a mark of 144-1. Tom Tymann reached 47-2.5 in the shot put to take 17th place.
CHARLOTTE, NC - Jamie Grayzer won the heptathlon with a personal-best score of 4641 and Kara Mullin won the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 12:03.69. Rachel Burns took eighth in the heptathlon with a score of 3649. Catherine Fortin-Major placed seventh in the 1,500m with a time of 4:45.06 and finished 11th in the 800m with a time of 2:20.32. Lauren May crossed the finish line 18th in the 1,500m with a time of 4:54.72 and ran a 2:24.80 in the 800m for 20th place. Danielle Coon was seventh in the 3,000m with a time of 10:10.34. Tess Fath (10:29.37), Becca Veenstra (10:37.58) and Caitlin Dempsey (10:56.49) also finished in the top 20 of the 3,000m. Denise Hefferin came in 7th in the 5,000m with a time of 19:13.80. Cassy Richards was the runner-up in the long jump with a mark of 18-3.75 and placed 11th in the 200m preliminaries with a time of 25.17. Detra Chambers finished 18th in the 100m hurdles prelims with a time of 16.19. Jackie Muscente took fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.54.
On the men's side, Ted DeVos won the 5,000m with a personal-best time of 14:25.76, while Brian Smith (5th, 14:45.31), Jimmy Butler (6th, 14:53.30), Brandon Bartholomew (9th, 14:59.18), Sean Nagorny (10th, 15:05.67), Philip Wiles (14th, 15:13.63) and Chris Demetra (18th, 15:23.81) all finished in the top 20. Mike Altieri ran a 3:49.20 in 1,500m for third place and Kevin Jones came in 10th with a time of 3:55.16. Fabian Davis placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-9.75 and also cleared 6-2 in the high jump for 14th place. Luke Orman cleared a career-best 6-6 for 10th place in the high jump and reached 21-0.5 in the long jump for 19th place. Jesse Richert tied for 18th place in the high jump with a mark of 6-0. Zach Hamilton cleared 14-9 for fifth place in the pole vault. Mike Piscetelli finished seventh in the decathlon with a score of 4734.
Wake Forest will return to action on Saturday, March 23 when the Demon Deacons host the 2002 Wake Forest Invitational at Kentner Stadium.
