The Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated No. 50 Florida State 6-1 Saturday afternoon. Playing in their fifth match in eight days the 19th-ranked Demon Deacons fought off the Seminoles by sweeping doubles play and taking five of six singles matches.
David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon, beat Florida State's 58th-ranked doubles team of Xavier Luscan and Rodrigo Laub 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles match. Wake Forest's Mike Murray and Derrick Spice won the No. 2 doubles match 8-6 over Mat Cloer and Alex Herrera. David Bere and Justin Kaufmann partnered to defeat Seminoles Gustav Bucht and Jarrod Owen 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Loewenthal and Spice won their singles matches in straight sets for Wake Forest as Loewenthal took out 49th-ranked Luscan 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 match and Spice beat Cloer 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 match. Bere, Murray and Kaufmann showed great resolve in singles play as their opponents took them to three sets. Bere put away Romain Jurd 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 match, Murray finished Chip Webb 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 match and Kaufmann battled past Jeff Scarella 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 in the No. 6 match. Bucht got the Seminoles' lone point of the day, defeating Brendon 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match.
Wake Forest improves to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACC with the win and Florida State falls to 12-6 and 4-1. The Demon Deacons return to action Wednesday, April 3, when they travel to Chapel Hill, NC. to take on No. 40 North Carolina at 3:00 p.m.
