WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team defeated WBC Ilirija 74-49 Thursday night in Reynolds Gym. The Deacons used a stifling defense and a balanced scoring attack to win their first exhibition of the season.
Senioir Tonia Brown scored ten of her team-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Sophomore Keila Evans (14) and junior Erin Ferrell (14) were the other two players scoring in double figures. Evans added 10 rebounds to record her a double-double.
Wake Forest jumped out to a quick 22-8 lead after a 15-2 run early in the first half. The run included a three-point play by senior Tracy Alston, which was followed by a Cotelia Bond-Young 3-pointer. After the run the Demon Deacons defense took over and forced 17 first-half turnovers. At the break, Wake Forest led 42-24.
Eighteen points was as close as WBC Ilirija would get in the second half as the Deacs continued to expand the lead. Brown capped an 8-3 run to begin the half to make the score 50-27 with 14:51 remaining. The Deacons cruised the rest of the way for the 25-point margin of victory.
The Deacs' defense stole the ball 15 times and forced 28 turnovers, while only committing 16 of their own. Wake Forest shot 36 percent from the field and 58 percent from the free throw line. The next game for the Deacons will be Monday night when they face Team adidas in the Joel Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
