Storrs, CT - The top-ranked and top-seeded Wake Forest field hockey team traveled to chilly Storrs, Connecticut on Saturday for NCAA first round action against Boston College. The Deacs defeated the 13th ranked Eagles, 5-1. With the win, Wake Forest advances to Sundays second round match against the winner of the Connecticut/Northeastern game.
Senior Kelly Doton, starting in her 84th consecutive game, scored the first goal of the game, to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead. The unassisted goal was the 44th of Kelly's career.
Claire Laubach dribbled through several defenders to make a great pass to Kristi Harshman, who connected with the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Eagles' Sara York put her team on the board off of a pass from Sabrina Lazzari.
On the Deacs third penalty corner of the first half, Kelly Dostal moved around the defenders to tap in her 25th season goal. Just seconds later, Kelly Doton's shot deflected off of the goal keeper and hit the post, but Dostal was there to tap it in again, to give the Deacs the 4-1 lead going into the half.
"I was proud of our explosion, late in the first half," said head coach Jennifer Averill, "I think we scored three goals in about five minutes, that really gave us a boost".
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Wake Forest defended a Boston College penalty corner, and passed the ball out of the circle to Jamie Whitten. Whitten started the fast break, connecting with Dostal at the top of the circle. Dostal passed to Katie Ackerman who chipped it in for her seventh season goal.
"This was not our prettiest game of hockey," said Averill, "but we managed to pull it together when it mattered. I was impressed with the way our defense stepped it up when we needed them to."
On Sunday at 2:00 pm, the Deacs will face the winner of the Northeastern/Connecticut game.
"We prepared for Boston College all week, we're taking things one game at a time. With today's win, we'll now focus on our next opponent" said Averill.
The Deacs improve to 19-1, and return to the second round of the NCAAs for the fifth year in a row.
