Winston-Salem, NC - After exciting first and second round NCAA action, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced it's choices for the All-Region teams on Monday. Five Deacs were selected as first team All-South members, while two received second team honors. No other schools in the South Region were as heavily represented, and only two other schools in the country posted as many honors in their respective region. Prior to 2003, no more than five Deacon players had been honored in the same season.
Seniors Kelly Doton, Katie Ridd, and Lucy Shaw received first team recognition. Doton, the back-to-back ACC Player of the Year, the ACC Tournament MVP, and a 2002 First Team National All American, receives First Team All-South honors for the third year in a row. Ridd, who leads the nation with the lowest goals against average, earns the award for the first time. In 2001, Shaw made the second team squad, but improved to first team in 2002, and again receives the highest honor this season.
With 29 goals and 63 points in 2003, Kelly Dostal sets two new Wake Forest records, for most goals and most points in a season. Such impressive statistics and a unique ability to score on almost every opportunity garner Kelly a spot on the First Team All-South for the second consecutive year. She is joined by Maeke Boreel, who etches her name into the NFHCA books for the first time. Maeke leads the team in assists this season, with 19.
The NFHCA award Second Team All-South Region honors to Claire Laubach and Lauren Crandall. Claire has taken nearly eighty percent of the Deacons 230 penalty corners this season, setting up most of Wake Forest's 92 goals. She received All-ACC honors for the time this year and likewise earns Second Team All-South. Freshman Lauren Crandall is the only rookie on the Deacon squad to join her veteran teammates. Lauren has tallied seven goals and one assist to lead the freshman class with 15 points.
Wake Forest, 20-1, defeated Boston College and The University of Connecticut this weekend in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Deacs advance to the final four for the fourth consecutive year, where they will face Michigan on Friday at 5:00 pm. The University of Massachusetts will host the NCAA Championship weekend, November 21, 23. Other teams bound for Amherst, Mass. include Duke University and The University of Maryland. Seven Maryland players received All-MidAtlantic honors, while Duke contributed five to the All-South squads, and Michigan just four to the All-West region.
