Men's Golf Finishes Fifth At Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Wake Forest men's golf team finished fifth at The PING-Arizona Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the 2003 spring season. The 16-team, 54-hole event took place at the par 71, 6,793-yard Arizona National Golf Course.
After positioning themselves in seventh after the first round with a one-over 285, the Demon Deacons used a seven-under par in the second-round and even 285 on the final 18 to move up two spots in the final standings. WFU finished at -6 for the tournament, just one stroke back of fourth-place USC and 17 strokes back of host Arizona (-23), the team champion. UCLA (-21) was second with Pepperdine (-12) in third. Wake Forest was the only school east of the Mississippi competing in the event.
Junior All-America Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) posted Wake Forest's top individual finish, tying for third with an eight-under 205 (76-68-70). He finished two strokes back of individual medalist Chris Baryla of UTEP. Haas' 205 matches his low 54-hole total from this past fall and is two strokes shy of his career-low 203. Including the 2002 fall season, Haas has finished among the top six individuals in five of six events.
Senior Brent Wanner posted the Deacs biggest improvement over the course of the tournament. Sitting in 53rd after a first-round 74, Wanner carded a four-under 67 in the second, followed by a 70 in the final round to vault into 15th place with a two-under 211. It is his fourth top 20 finish in six events of the 2002-03 campaign.
Freshman Kyle Reifers (Dublin, Ohio) finished 42nd with a three-over 216 (72-71-73), while seniors Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) and Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio) finished tied for 57th with a seven-over 220. Lowe posted rounds of 76-73-71, while Yoder carded 72-71-77.
Next up for the third-ranked Demon Deacon squad is the Tulane Invitational in New Orleans, La. from February 11-12.
