Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 To #3 Georgia

MADISON, Wisc. - The 28th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team lost its first round match of the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship 5-2 to No. 3 Georgia Thursday morning at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz recorded the Demon Deacons' two singles victories with come-from-behind three-set upset wins.
The Bulldogs swept doubles play, taking an early 1-0 lead and eventually won four singles matches to secure the victory, but Wake Forest hung tough, extending Georgia to three sets in three matches. Martzolf upset 35th-ranked Anne Nguyen 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match and Schwartz upset No. 123 Lori Grey 2-6, 6-2 (10-7) in the No. 3 singles match. Top-ranked Agata Cioroch won the deciding match over WFU's Karin Coetzee. Coetzee and doubles partner Aimee Smith took the 15th-ranked tandem of Cioroch and Lori Grey to the wire before falling 8-7 (5).
Georgia improves to 3-0 with the win and advances to the quarterfinals. Wake Forest falls to 1-2 with the loss and will face an opponent to be determined tonight in consolation play tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. (CT)/10 am (ET).
