#16 Clemson Outlasts Wake Forest 4-1

RALEIGH/CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 heartbreaker to second-seeded and 16th-ranked Clemson in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Friday afternoon. The five-and-a-half hour match started outdoors at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. and ended inside at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. Clemson won two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Just as singles play was about to begin, rain began to fall and forced the tournament to move indoors.
"We ended the season on a good effort," said Wake Forest head coach Brian Fleishman. "Clemson was the better team. I think that we really grew as a team this season and our theme all year was its not how we start, but how we finish and I think we really finished strong. Hopefully we can take this and grow from it next year."
Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith pulled off a huge upset in doubles, spilling Clemson's 27th-ranked pair Laurence Jayet and Julie Coin 8-6 at No. 1. Danielle Schwartz took out Jayet 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles for the Demon Deacons' lone singles win.
Elizabeth Proctor and Sandie Knight both took their Tiger opponents to three sets before falling and Katie Martzolf and Coetzee were both in the third sets of singles play, with Martzolf at match point, when Clemson's Ania Dolinska won the deciding match over Knight.
The Demon Deacons end their season with a record of 4-22 and return all six starters next year.
