Wake Forest will send 11 track and field athletes -- four men and seven women -- to the NCAA Track and Field East Regional in Fairfax, VA, Friday and Saturday.
The top five performers in each event from each of the four regionals across the nation will advance to the NCAA Championships June 11-14 in Sacramento, CA. This is the first year of NCAA regional competition and athletes from more than 100 schools will participate in Fairfax. George Mason is the host school of the East Regional, while Ohio State, Nebraska and Stanford will also host regionals this weekend.
On the women's side, Anne Bersagel (1,500 meters and 5,000 meters), junior Nikeya Green (800 meters and 1,500 meters), and freshman Lindsay Neubereger (shot put) offer WFU's best chance at advancing. All three earned All-ACC honors this year, and Bersagel and Neubereger broke school records. Neubereger broke the school mark in the shot put twice and in the hammer throw once.
Other Deacons competing this week are junior Anna Sherman (1,500 meters), sophomore Cassy Richards (long jump), junior Kara Mullin (steeplechase) and junior Catherine Fortin-Major (steeplechase).
On the men's side, All-ACC honoree Michael Altieri (1,500 meters) leads a group of four Deacons participating in the Fairfax regional. Seniors Jimmy Butler (5,000 meters) and Tom Tymann (shot put) and freshman Brad Wharton (1,500 meters) will also be in action.
