Blacksburg, Va. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team dominated first day action of the 2003 Virginia Tech Invitational Friday afternoon. The Demon Deacons' seven players went 12-2 in singles play and five advanced into Saturday's semifinals.

In Flight A, junior and top seed Karin Coetzee blanked Spencer Brown of James Madison, 6-0, 6-0, in her first match of the weekend. Coetzee, 51st in the preseason ITA rankings, then defeated Ashley Kroh of Marshall, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman and third seed Ashlee Davis also picked up a straight set victory. Davis defeated Sylwia Ziolkowska of East Tennessee State, 6-2, 6-2. Davis then capped off her first day with a second straight impressive two-set victory. Davis defeated Carolyn Kramer, 6-2, 6-1. Both advance into the semifinals with their two victories.

In Flight B, senior Aimee Smith did register a straight set victory over Renata Caceras of Winthrop (7-6 (3), 6-1), but was pushed to the tie-breaker in the opening set. Smith dominated the tie-breaker before cruising past Caceras in the second set. The senior then opened her second match of the day with a convincing 6-1 victory in the first set, but dropped the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2 to Joelle Good of Marshall.

Also in Flight B, Danielle Schwartz wasted little time getting the Demon Deacons off on a positive note. The junior raced past Ashley Reyher of James Madison, 6-1, 6-0. Schwartz followed up that first victory with another later in the afternoon against Ashley James of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 6-1. Fellow senior Elizabeth Proctor also registered a pair of straight set victories. Proctor buried Mary Napier of James Madison, 6-1, 6-0. Proctor then earned a berth into the semifinals with another impressive performance against Jessica Irey of East Tennessee State (6-0, 6-3). Schwartz and Proctor will meet tomorrow in the semifinals.

In Flight C action, Sophomore Sandie Knight and freshman Blakely Offutt had equally easy times in their opening match. Knight breezed past Ashley Girrard of Radford, 6-0, 6-0, while Offutt picked up her fourth victory of the fall season. The freshman, who captured the eighth singles flight title last weekend at the University of Tennessee St. Mary's Classic, cruised past Holly Asel of Marshall in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

The freshman then captured her fifth straight match later in the afternoon with a hard-fought two set victory over Ana Simanaca on Winthrop, 7-6 (4), 7-5. With the victory, Offutt moved into the semifinals. Unfortunately, Knight did not have an easy time in her second match of the afternoon. Knight dropped her match to Paula Takahashi of Winthrop in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Doubles play do not start until Saturday morning.
