
Women's Tennis Blanks Charlotte, 7-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team opened up its 2004 season with a convincing 7-0 victory over Charlotte in women's college tennis action from the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons (1-0) swept each of the three doubles matches and the six singles matches. In fact, the Deacs did not drop a single set in singles play.
Junior Katie Martzolf and freshman Ashlee Davis defeated Laura Swain and Ashleigh Murray in No. 1 doubles, 8-5. Martzolf and Davis were ranked seventh in the Southeast Region and 20th in the first ITA rankings of the year.
Junior Danielle Schwartz and senior Aimee Smith disposed of Ofra Friedman and Kathy Robay, 8-4, in No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Sandie Knight and freshman Blakely Offutt edged out Marilyn Clark and Jennifer Hatch, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Martzolf earned a hard-fought victory over Swain at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 7-6 (1). Davis had little difficulty with Friedman at No. 2 singles, cruising 6-2, 6-1. Smith swept her way past Lindsay Morris in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Schwartz clinched the match win for the Demon Deacons with a 6-3, 6-3 pasting of Murray at No. 4 singles.
Senior Elizabeth Proctor and Knight closed out singles action for Wake Forest. Proctor got past Robay, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, while Knight defeated Ali Piacante, 6-2, 6-1.
The Demon Deacons top two singles' players, junior Karin Coetzee, 15th in the latest ITA National Rankings, and freshman Alex Hirsch - 38th - did not compete.
The Deacs return to action tomorrow afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center against UNC Greensboro. First-serve is scheduled for noon.
