WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Three members of the Wake Forest women's tennis team are ranked among the top 100 in the country, according to the first set of rankings released by the ITA in 2004. Junior Karin Coetzee (15th), freshman Alex Hirsch (38th) and junior Katie Martzolf (94th) each earned individual rankings, while two Demon Deacon doubles teams were also ranked among the top 20.
Coetzee, a native of Bloemfontein, South Africa, posted a 13-2 record in fall action. Coetzee, who is fourth in the Southeast Region, not only captured the 2003 ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championship with a 6-1, 6-3 straight set victory over unseeded Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky, but also moved into the quarterfinals of the 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
Coetzee and Aimee Smith, who rank fourth in the Southeast Region, find themselves 15th. The tandem is just three points behind 14th-ranked Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh of Marshall, with whom Coetzee and Smith defeated at the Virginia Tech Invitational this fall. Coetzee and Smith, a Norcross, Ga. native, recorded a fall record of 13-2 and finished second in the 2003 ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championship.
Hirsch, a native of Atlanta, Ga., went 7-1 this past fall, reaching the 2003 ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championship semifinals. Hirsch, who is sixth in the Southeast Region, not only knocked off the second seed en route to the semifinals, but also defeated then 37th-ranked Manon Kruse of Middle Tennessee State.
Martzolf, an Indianapolis, Indiana native, was the third and final Demon Deacon among the top 100. Martzolf was ranked 94th. She battled injuries in the fall, but still managed to finish the season at 6-3.
Martzolf and freshman Ashlee Davis were ranked 20th in doubles. The duo did not play together in the fall, but Martzolf went 7-1 in doubles, while Davis, a native of Anderson, Ind., was 2-2.
Wake Forest will open its 2004 spring season on Jan. 31 at Leighton Tennis Stadium against Charlotte. Match time is noon.
