Women's Tennis Individuals And Doubles Teams Ranked In Southeast

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Three members of the Wake Forest women's tennis team are ranked among the top 25 in the Southeast Region, according to the fall rankings released by the ITA. Karin Coetzee (4th), Alex Hirsch (6th) and Katie Martzolf (21st) each earned individual rankings, while two Demon Deacon doubles teams were also ranked among the top 10 region leaders.
Junior Karin Coetzee, a native of Bloemfontein, South Africa, is ranked fourth in the region in singles after posting a 13-2 record in fall action. Coetzee not only captured the 2003 ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championship with a 6-1, 6-3 straight set victory over unseeded Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky, but also moved into the quarterfinals of the 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
Coetzee and fellow teammate Aimee Smith find themselves ranked fourth in the region in doubles. The tandem recorded a fall record of 13-2 and finished second in the 2003 ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championship.
Freshman Alex Hirsch, a native of Atlanta, Ga., was ranked sixth in the region after a stellar fall season. The first-year player went 7-1, reaching the 2003 ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championship semifinals. Hirsch not only knocked off the second seed en route to the semifinals, but also defeated 37th-ranked Manon Kruse of Middle Tennessee State.
Junior Katie Martzolf, an Indianapolis, Indiana native, was ranked 21st in the region at singles. Martzolf battled injuries in the fall, but still managed to finish the season at 6-3.
Martzolf and freshman Ashlee Davis were ranked seventh in the region at doubles. The duo did not play together in the fall, but Martzolf went 7-1 in doubles, while Davis was 2-2.
Wake Forest will open its 2004 spring season on Jan. 31 at Leighton Tennis Stadium against Charlotte. Match time is noon.
