Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No.1-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team travels to Charlottesville, Va. for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday with the No. 16 Virginia Cavaliers. The game will be the final regular season game for the Deacons and the last of the ACC regular season games for Wake Forest. The Deacs are 14-2 (1-2 in the ACC), while the Cavaliers are 10-7 (0-2 in the ACC).
"This will be a tough road game," said Deacon head coach Jennifer Averill. "Virginia is very good at home and they are playing well right now. We hope to carry our solid play from Wednesday to Charlottesville for the last conference game this season."
Virginia leads the all-time series, 14-7. The programs first met on Sept. 27, 1987, when Wake Forest dropped a 5-0 decision at home. Virginia won the first seven games of the series, before the Deacons captured their first win against the Cavs, Oct. 28, 1994, a 2-1 win at home.
Virginia won another seven in a row, but Wake has won the last six meetings. The current Deacon winning streak began with an 8-1 victory on Oct. 23, 1999. Wake Forest defeated Virginia in Kentner Stadium last year in the last home game of the season, 5-1, to secure a second straight 4-0 record in the ACC Regular season.
In the last six games, the Deacons have outscored the Cavaliers 26-5, including two shutouts. In 2004, Wake Forest has outscored opponents 70-21, with six shutouts. Sunday's game will be the last of the regular season ACC games for the Deacons. Virginia still must face Duke in the last ACC game before the ACC Tournament. Wake Forest knocked off No.1-ranked Maryland in their only ACC win of the season. Virginia has yet to win an ACC contest in 2004.
The Deacons enjoy nearly two weeks off after Sunday's game in Charlottesville. The ACC Tournament will be held in Kentner Stadium at Wake Forest University, Nov. 4-7. Admission is free for all games.
