Winston-Salem, N.C. - Five Demon Deacon field hockey players received All-South Region honors announced the NFHCA on Tuesday. Kelly Dostal, Claire Laubach, Maeke Boreel and Lauren Crandall dotted the first team while Ariel Meyers earned a spot on the second team. Wake Forest posted the most representatives of any school on the first team in the region for the second consecutive year.
"I'm thrilled for each of them," said associate head coach Neil Macmillan. "These individual recognitions are definitely a reflection of the entire team's performance. I'm especially happy for Ariel and Claire, because sometimes defenders can get overlooked and these two are an integral part of our success."
Dostal, a senior from Hatfield, Mass. leads the nation in points (76), points/game (3.619), is tied for second in goals (29) and tied for third in goals/game (1.381), is tied for first in assists (18) and is third in assists/game (.857). She leads the ACC in each of those categories and was named the 2004 ACC Offensive Player of the Year for her efforts. She has tallied at least one point in every game this season and was selected to the NFHCA Senior All-star team this season. She has been named first team All-South region each of the last three years.
Laubach, a senior from Centreville, Va. is an instrumental part of a Deacon defense that has dominated conference and non-conference opponents in her four years at Wake Forest. The Deacs are a combined 76-11 and have outscored opponents 344-87 in the last four seasons. Laubach has led a backfield that has allowed only 548 opponents shots, to the Deacons 1836 shots. She has been named All-ACC two years in a row and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team in 2003. She has injected nearly all of the Deacons' 197 penalty corners this season and has tallied eight goals and nine assists for 25 points. She too was named to the NFHCA Senior All-star team this season. Laubach was named a second-team All-South region player last season.
Boreel, a junior from Almen, Holland has led the team in assists each of the last two seasons. This is the second consecutive year she has been tabbed an All-South region first team player. She acts as the stopper on most of the Deacon penalty corners and has tallied 18 assists, most of which stem from that role, in 2004. She has scored four goals, including three game-winners this season. She was named All-ACC in 2003 and 2004 and to the NCAA All-Tournament team as a sophomore in 2003.
Crandall, a sophomore from Doylestown, Pa. earns first-team All-South region honors for the first time in her Deacon career. She was named a second-teamer last season. She is one of only two Deacon sophomores to play in every game since her arrival in Winston-Salem, starting all but one of those contests. She has eight goals and nine assists this season. She was named All-ACC for her efforts in 2004.
Meyers, a junior from Lititz, Pa. claims an NFHCA honor for the first time. She joins nine other ACC athletes on the second team in 2004. She was named to the ACC All-Tournament team in the Deacons' second consecutive ACC Championship last season. Meyers tallied a goal in each of the games this past weekend, to help lead the Deacons to a fifth straight NCAA Semifinal appearance. She has started every game this season and all but one last year. She has one defensive save and three goals in 2004.
