Deacons Clinch Victories at the Crimson Tide Fall Tournament

Tuscaloosa, AL - The Wake Forest men's tennis team participated in the Crimson Tide Fall Tournament this past weekend, Oct. 29-31. Outstanding performances by Charles Sartor, Joe Bates, and the doubles team of Brett Ross and Derrick Spice guided the Deacs through the tournament.
After losing in the round of 32 in the Flight B Singles to Andre Maier of UAB, 4-6, 3-6, Sartor gained momentum in the consolation round to reach the finals. In the 1st round of the consolation draw, Sartor defeated USM's Juan Garzon, 6-2, 6-2. Sartor defeated Eric Riley of Virginia in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-1. A semifinal victory over Georgia Tech's George Gvelesiani, 6-3, 6-4, clinched a spot in the finals for Sartor. However, Sartor was defeated by Irackli Akhvlediani of Notre Dame in the finals, 1-6, 2-6.
Andrew Hamar, Todd Paul, Ross, and Spice competed in the Flight A Singles draw of the tournament. Hamar was defeated by Miami's Josh Cohen in the round of 16, 6-7(4), 0-6. In the consolation quarterfinals, Hamar lost in three sets to Georgia Tech's Zach Rath, 6-1, 0-6, 6-10. In the round of 32, Paul was defeated by Joseph Jung of Alabama, 6-4, 1-6, 2-6. After entering the consolation draw, Miami's Eric Hechtman clinched the win over Paul, 7-5, 4-6, 6-10.
Ross sealed his first victory in the round of 32 against USM's David Canudas, 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-3. In the round of 16, Ross defeated Sebastian Falk of UAB, 6-3, 7-6(2). Ross bowed out in the quarterfinals to Virginia's Treat Huey, 4-6, 4-6. Spice also began his play in the Flight A Singles with a victory over USM's Marc-Oliver Lux, 6-0, 6-1. After losing to Sheva Parbhu of Notre Dame in the round of 16, 6-7(6), 3-6, Ross was defeated in the consolation draw by Miami's Tim Krebs, 6-3, 5-7, 4-10.
In the Flight B Singles draw, Liron Strauss represented the Deacs by reaching the semifinals. In the round of 32, Strauss defeated Maurico Engler of Birmingham So., 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Strauss grabbed a win in the round of 16 against Alabama's Billy Mertz, 7-6, 6-4. A three set victory over MSU's Arnaud Roussel in the quarterfinals landed Strauss hin the semifinals. Marko Rajevac of Georgia Tech defeated Strauss, 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 in the semifinal round.
Joe Bates advanced to the final round of the Flight C Singles title after an impressive run. In the round of 16, Bates defeated Georgia Tech's Noah Tyler in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Bates clinched a win over Pepperdine's Kevin Borzenski in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-6(3). Bates' victory over Christian Rybertt of Jacksonville St., 6-3, 6-2 advanced Bates to the finals. Bates lost to Notre Dame's Patrick Buchanan, 3-6, 5-7. Also participating in the Flight C Singles draw was John Shults. Shults defeated Dylan Mezey of USM in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-3. However, Shults bowed out to Arizona's Luka Cerenko, 4-6, 0-6 in the round of 16.
In doubles action, the team of Ross/Spice won the Flight A Doubles title. Ross/Spice defeated Langenkamp/Parbhu of Notre Dame in the round of 16, 8-4. In the quarterfinals, they clinched a win against Troy's Morales/Quiceno, 8-3. After defeating Virginia's team of Huey/Riley in the semifinals, 8-6, Ross/Spice captured the doubles title with a win over Georgia Tech's Blackman/Radovic, 8-2.
Hamar/Paul also competed in the Flight A Doubles draw. After a first round win against Pepperdine's Johnson/Rafidison, 8-6, Hamar/Paul bowed out to Buchanan/Roth of Notre Dame, 9-8(7). In Flight B Doubles, Bates/Strauss were defeated in both the round of 16 of the main draw and in the first round of the consolation bracket. The team of Sartor/Shults advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight C Doubles draw, where they lost to Georgia Tech's Gvelesiani/Tyler, 4-8.
