Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest track and field freshman Molly Kennedy was named a Verizon Junior All-American after an outstanding heptathlon performance at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in College Station, Texas this past summer. The Nashville, Tenn. native promises to be a big part of the success of the Deacon track and field program in 2005.
"Molly will certainly be someone around whom we build an already growing program," said head throws coach John Williams. "She brings such diversity to the team and will allow us to better perform at all levels. While she will compete primarily in the heptathlon, she can also contribute in team oriented events such as relays."
To achieve the rank of Verizon All-American, 287 athletes finished in the top eight places at the 2004 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 25-27 in College Station, Texas. The meet was part of USATF's Verizon Youth Series, and competitors were required to be U.S. citizens and to be no older than 19-years-old during the 2004 calendar year.
Kennedy competed for the personal best track club, based in Nashville. She was coached by 1988 Olympic decathlete Gary Kinder. She will participate in the heptathlon for the Deacons this season.
