Demon Deacons Whip William & Mary, 5-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team knocked off #16 William & Mary, 5-2, in college women's tennis action Friday evening at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The victory is the first over a top-20 foe since May 16, 2002 when the Demon Deacons eliminated #9 Texas from the NCAA Tournament.
The Deacs jumped out early, winning the top two doubles positions for the team point. #47 Karin Coetzee and Katie Martzolf defeated #31 Megan Muth and Amy Wei, 8-4. Ashlee Davis and Danielle Schwartz secured the doubles point with an 8-3 rout of Kate Boomershinea and Lena Sherbakov, 8-3.
The Demon Deacons quickly clinched the contest, taking the singles matches at No. 5, No. 3 and No. 6 for a decisive, 4-0, lead.
Schwartz earned a straight set victory over Emily Lowery, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5. Davis followed up Schwartz's impressive victory with one of her own. The freshman also recorded a straight set victory over Wei, 6-1, 6-3.
Senior Aimee Smith then sealed the match for the Deacs with her straight set victory over Alex de Guzman, 6-2, 6-2.
Muth gave the Tribe its first point with her 7-6, 6-3, upset win at No. 1 over #10 Coetzee. Sophomore Lena Sherbakov, ranked 78th in the country, won her sixth consecutive match defeating Martzolf, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2.
The Demon Deacons' fifth point came at No. 4, where senior Liz Proctor came back to defeat Yang, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6).
Wake Forest improves to 6-2, while William & Mary drops to 9-5.
Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Ohio State. First-serve is scheduled for 1:00 PM at the MNTC.
