
Women's Tennis Knocks Off Penn State, 5-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The 72nd-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team continued its stellar start to the 2004 spring season with a convincing 5-2 victory over Penn State in dual meet action from Yale's Cullman Courts. The Demon Deacons improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Nittany Lions dropped to 1-3 after suffering their third straight loss to a ranked opponent.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead after winning the doubles point in a sweep. The Deacs captured all three doubles matches. Juniors' Karin Coetzee and Katie Martzolf defeated Leigh Ann Merryman and Maaria Husain, 8-4. Freshman Ashlee Davis and junior Danielle Schwartz were victorious, 8-3, while seniors' Aimee Smith and Liz Proctor won their match, 8-3.
The Demon Deacons went up 2-0 after 15th-ranked Coetzee cruised past Merryman, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
The Nittany Lions then picked up back-to-back straight-set victories. #94 Martzolf lost to Megan Marton, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Schwartz dropped her match at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Wake Forest would ultimately hold off the Penn State charge by picking up crucial three-set wins in the No. 3 and No. 6 matches.
Davis outlasted Husain at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Proctor rallied from one set down to defeat Sasha Abraham, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Deacs return to action Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. against #72 Yale.
