Track and Field Competes At Tar Heel Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Wake Forest track and field team began its outdoor season Saturday at the Tar Heel Opener held at the Irwin Belk Track at Fetzer Field on the University of North Carolina's campus. Team results were not kept at the competition, but the Demon Deacons were represented by a number of individuals.

Diane Anderson turned in the a first-place finish in the women's 400m event with a time of 55.91. Anderson also took home a second-place time in the 200m. Wake Forest had four participants in the women's 800m, led by Adralyn Wendel and her 2:15.42 mark. Freshman Selina Sekulic also notched a third-place time in the 3,000m run for the Deacs.

On the men's side, Eric Seely turned in a strong day for Wake Forest on Saturday. He recorded a third-place finish with a time of 21.93 in the 200m dash and his 48.60 in the 400m was good for second place overall. In the 800m event, five of the top ten finishers were from Wake Forest, including Chris Catton and Brad Wharton who place first and second, respectively. Brian Smith won the 3,000m and Mike Loyd recorded the top 110m hurdles mark of the day.

The Demon Deacons will return to competition next weekend at the Raleigh Relays.
