CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The Wake Forest track and field team wrapped up competition Saturday in Chapel Hill at the second and final day of the 2004 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The top-finisher on the day for the Deacs was senior Nikeya Green who won the 800m event with a time of 2:05.68, becoming just the second Demon Deacon ever to win that event and first since 1994 when Chrissy Person performed the feat. Green also won the 800m crown at the ACC Indoor Championships back in February.
Clemson accumulated an ACC outdoor record 224 points on the men's side to win their tenth outright title, while the North Carolina women registered their fourth consecutive outdoor title and 14th championship overall. The Tar Heels finished the tournament with 186.5 points. The Wake Forest women placed fifth with 70 points, the most by a Demon Deacon team since Annie Bennett became the head coach in 1999 and the third-most in school history. It also marked the fourth time the Demon Deacon women have placed fifth at the outdoor championships. Wake Forest's men's score of 34 points put them in seventh place overall.
Also on the day for Wake Forest, sophomore Lindsay Neuberger finished second in the shot put and set a new school record with a distance of 50-00.75, one inch more than the previous record she set in 2003.
Four Demon Deacon women, including Green, competed in Saturday's 800m finals which made up half of the athletes in that event. Hanna Bremler registered a personal-best time of 2:11.24 and placed fourth while Shauna Danos and Adralyn Wendel came in seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the women's 1,500m run, Anna Sherman placed second overall with a personal-best time of 4:18.32 which is also the second best time in that event by a woman in Wake Forest history. Sherman also ran in the 5,000m event and placed eighth. The Demon Deacons' top finisher in the 5,000m was Annie Bersagel who ran a 16:37.70 and placed fourth overall.
Yet another impressive accomplishment for a Wake Forest athlete came in Friday's competition where Selina Sekulic finished sixth overall in the 3,000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:42.87 which qualifies her for a possible spot on the World Junior Team.
The Demon Deacon men recorded 34 points to place seventh, both improvements over their finish at the Indoor Championships in February. Brad Wharton was the top-finisher on the day for Wake Forest, taking home a second-place finish in the 1,500m run with a time of 3:45.94. This was a personal-best time for Wharton along with a season-best for the Deacs and puts him sixth on Wake's all-time 1,500m list.
Other strong performances were turned in by Mike Loyd in the 110m hurdles finals where he placed third overall and by the Wake Forest men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams which placed third and fourth, respectively.
