The top-ranked field hockey team did not take yesterday's loss lightly. The Deacons came back from their first defeat this season, to beat the Louisville Cardinals, 6-1 at Kentner Stadium Sunday. Freshman Tamar Meijer led the Deacons with her second career hat trick. Wake Forest improves to 6-1 while Louisville falls to 1-4.

"I was very proud of our effort today," said Deacon head coach Jennifer Averill. "I thought yesterday we played more of a one-on-one style game and we slipped into that a bit in today's first half, but in the second part of the game, we really worked well combining with one another. If we continue with that theme and approach, we can be extremely threatening."

Jen Kastelic put Louisville on the board with a goal just five minutes into the match. Janelle Avila was credited with the assist. It would be the Cardinals only goal of the game.

Kristi Harshman found Meijer minutes later to knot the score at one. The goal marked the 10th by Meijer this season. She leads the Deacons in goals scored. Harshman tallied her third assist of the season on the play.

Louisville swapped goalkeepers before Kelly Dostal set up for a Deacon penalty stroke. The senior All-American sent one flying into the right corner, for her ninth goal this season. The goal would prove to be the game winner, her third such in 2004.

With starting goalkeeper Jenna Halulko back in the cage for the Cardinals, Claire Lawhon found her first goal of the season with just over a minute left before the break.

Dostal connected with Meijer for Deacon goal number four at the 39:25 mark. On the third Deacon penalty corner of the game, Whitten inbounded to Maeke Boreel who chipped to Dostal for her second goal of the contest.

Meijer would complete the hat trick at the 51:09 point, on an assist from Haley Scott. Scott started Sunday's contest in place of senior Claire Laubach. It was Scott's first career start and the only game in Laubach's career that she has not been a part of the Deacon starting lineup. Laubach suffered an injury in practice last week that was reaggravated in yesterday's highly-physical match with Duke.

Wake Forest out-shot the Cardinals 25-3. The Deacons did not allow Louisville a second half shot until five minutes remaining in regulation. The ball spent the majority of the time in the Cardinal backfield in second half play.

Kristina Gagliardi pocketed one save on the afternoon and was credited with the win. Her career record improves to 6-1.

All of the Deacon field players participated in today's contest.

Next weekend, the Deacons travel to East Lansing, Mich., for a Saturday game with Kent State and a Sunday match against Michigan State. The Spartans are the only team to have beaten Duke this season. The Blue Devils fell on the road, 4-1. Saturday's game begins at 2 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
