Boone, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team rolled past Appalachian State, 4-1 Wednesday evening. Junior Ariel Meyers scored the first goal of the game and her first goal of the season to give the Deacons their 10th victory this year. Wake Forest improves to 10-1, while Appalachian State drops to 4-6.

The Deacons dominated from start to finish. In the first half alone, Wake Forest took 16 shots and 12 penalty corners. Appalachian State only flirted with the midfield line once, but senior Claire Laubach nipped any hopes of a Mountaineer scoring drive, stealing the ball from an Appalachian State attacker and sending action back down field.

Maeke Boreel crossed to Ariel Meyers for the only points of the first half. Meyers tallied her first goal of the season, the 16th of her career. Boreel was credited with her eighth assist of 2004.

Appalachian State came out strong in the second half. The Mountaineers did not allow a Deacon shot until the 28:14 mark. Tamar Meijer dribbled, turned around a defender and fired one past Appalachian State goal keeper Kate Ryno. It was Meijer's 14th goal of the season. The only freshman starter, Meijer is second on the team and in the ACC in goals scored.

On the 18th penalty corner of the game, Laubach injected to Tracy Scott, then ran behind Ryno to receive Scott's return pass. Laubach made it look easy, as she finished the play for her fourth goal of the season.

With nine minutes remaining, the Mountaineers took three consecutive penalty corners, on the third of which, Lisa Witkowski scored the only goal of the game for Appalachian State.

With only 1:30 left in the game, Dostal passed to Kristi Harshman who tapped in the fourth and final Deacon goal of the game.

Wake Forest took 25 penalty corners (the most in a single game so far this season) and 29 shots, while Appalachian State posted three corners and two shots. Ryno posted 16 saves for the Mountaineers.

The Deacons travel to Chapel Hill for their third show down with a No.1-ranked team in just 13 days. The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels are 12-0, one of only two undefeated teams remaining in collegiate field hockey. The University of Connecticut is 9-0 and ranked sixth in the latest NFHCA poll.
