Urbana, I.L. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team faced 33rd ranked Illinois and improved to 3-0 in their first difficult road test of the spring season. The Demon Deacons recorded a 5-2 victory by clinching the doubles action and winning four of the six singles matches at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Wake Forest (3-0) won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The 33rd ranked doubles team of Karin Coetzee and Ashlee Davis won a tough match at the number one spot over 54th ranked Brianna Knue and Macall Harkins of Illinois 8-6. Jenna Loeb and Alex Hirsch finalized the doubles win with an 8-4 victory over Momei Qu and Anastasia Sokolova.
In singles, Ashlee Davis won a solid match at the number two spot 6-3, 7-5 over Macall Harkins. Katie Martzolf was a winner at the number three doubles position with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Momei Qu. Danielle Schwartz scored a win at the number four position, beating Brianna Knue 6-3, 6-2. Finally, Jenna Loeb won a three set match at the number five position to defeat Alejandra Meza Cuadra 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Assistant coach Janet Bergman was pleased with the teams overall effort. She stated, "I thought everyone competed hard, played well, and played aggressive. That was vital to our success.
The Demon Deacons resume play Sunday at 10:00am against Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
