Winston-Salem, N.C. - Junior Lauren Crandall scored a goal and added three assists as the No. 1 Wake Forest field hockey team's cruised past Stanford, 6-1, Monday afternoon in Kentner Stadium. The win improves the Demon Deacons to 12-0 on the season and increases their overall winning streak to 16.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead in the first half, scoring five of the six goals in the first 35. Freshman Michelle Kasold had two, while Kristi Harshman, Christine Suggs and Crandall each had one. Junior Tracey Scott scored the only goal of the second half.
Kasold got the ball rolling for Wake just less than two minutes into the game scoring off a cross from the far side that came from Haley Scott. Continuing to maintain possession, the Deacs brought the ball into the circle. From there, Crandall took a shot that was saved by Stanford's Madison Bell. Grabbing the rebound off her pads, Harshman injected it in for the second goal of the game. Six minutes later, Kasold connected again after dribbling the ball into the circle and taking a clean shot from the top.
As the game progressed, the Deacs earned five penalty corners and took six shots in a span of 10 minutes. On the sixth corner, senior Kelly Wood took a strong shot that was saved. Unfortunately, a foul by Bell resulted in a penalty stroke. Taking the free shot, Crandall expertly found the net and put the Deacs ahead by four. With two minutes remaining in the half, Wake earned one final corner and Suggs connected off the second shot to close the half.
In the second stanza, the Deacs continued to dominate, despite only taking six shots. Tracey Scott earned the last goal of the game for Wake at the 60 minute mark when Crandall pushed the ball from the top of the circle to Scott who was waiting at the post. Knocking the back of the wood, Scott earned her second goal of the season.
Despite the large lead by Wake Forest, the Cardinals didn't give up, pushing the ball into Wake's territory. Stanford's Caroline Hussey fired a shot that resulted in three quick penalty corners. On the third, Missy Halliday found the ball in the front of the cage and put it behind Crystal Duffield for Stanford's only goal of the day.
Duffield, who split the game with junior Kristina Gagliardi, earned four saves, while Bell played 60:09 for Stanford and earned 10 saves. Sarah Scheller played the remaining 10 minutes and had two goals against and no saves.
Wake Forest is currently on a 61 game non-conference winning streak and will look to extend it on Friday afternoon against North Carolina. Game time in Chapel Hill is set for 4 p.m.
