Box Score

College Park, Md. -- Susie Rowe scored the game winner off a corner with 41 seconds remaining in regulation as Maryland pushed past the Wake Forest, 3-2, to win the 2005 ACC field hockey championship, Sunday afternoon.

The game marks the first loss for the Demon Deacons this season and snaps a 23 game winning streak.

Freshman Christine Suggs, who leads the team with 15 goals including one against the Terps, was named the ACC Freshman of the year, while Junior Lauren Crandall and senior Ariel Meyers were both named to the ACC all-tournament team.

The Deacs got off to a quick start earning corner in the first minute of the game. Crandall and Michelle Kasold both managed to get shots off, but Maryland quickly took possession after the corners and brought the ball down into the Wake Forest territory. Earning a corner at 30:35, Janneke van Leeuwen connected off the rebound and put the Terps up with the early lead.

After the first goal, the two teams ran the ball up and down the field. Wake Forest's Tracey Scott nearly scored with nine minutes remaining, but the Maryland goalkeeper, Katy Masson made the save by throwing her stick at the ball. After the save, Wake held control and kept it inside the circle and pulled two consecutive penalty corners from the Terps. Connecting on the second, Suggs received the ball from Crandall and tied the score at one each.

The tie was short lived as the Terps scored again with a goal from Jackie Ciconte off penalty corner with 1:36 remaining in the half. Despite outshooting Maryland 10-4 in the first stanza, the Deacs left for the break trailing 2-1.

It wasn't until 15 minutes into the second half that Wake Forest was able to even the score. Earing a penalty corner after Haley Scott brought the ball down into the circle, Crandall connected with a lifted shot that sunk perfectly into the back of the cage.

Wake Forest remained in control for the majority of the half and it wasn't until a late surge by Maryland took the advantage. First earning a corner with three minutes remaining, the Deacs successfully defended the cage, but Maryland continued to push and earned another one with less than a minute remaining. Scoring off the rebound, Rowe knocked it in.

On the game, the Demon Deacons outshot the Terps, 19 to 13 and took 10 penalty corners to Maryland's four. Kristina Gagliardi played all 70 minutes for the Deacs and had five saves. Playing in goal for the Terps, Masson had eight saves.

Wake Forest will next wait for the parings for the NCAA Tournament that is set to begin on Nov. 11 and 12. The announcement of the tournament bracket will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7:45 p.m.
