Track and Field Finishes Competition At Virginia Tech Challenge

Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams wrapped up competition at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday. The two day event featured 27 teams, including eight ACC rivals. The Deacons travel to Chapel Hill, NC next weekend for the ACC Indoor Track and Field Tournament.
On the women's side, there were five top-20 finishes. Melissa Council placed 14th in the 200 meter race with a 25.03 time. In the 500 meter event, Mary Giardina finished 16th, running a 1:24.90. Michelle Duffey and Merry Placer paced the Deacs in the 800 meter race with 12th and 19th place finishes and marks of 2:17.85 and 2:20.84 respectively.
Catherine Muehleib threw the shot put 12.35 meters, good for a 14th place finish in that event.
The men recorded several strong performances as well, including three top-10 finishes. Michael Bingham was a tenth of a second shy of making the cut out of the 55 meter prelims after running a 6.51. He fell just short in the 55 meter hurdles as well, after his 7.69 was again, a tenth of a second off qualifying out of the preliminary race.
Willie Idlette ran a 22.36 200 meter dash, good for 18th place. Eric Seely continued his strong junior season with a 4th place 48.65 showing in the men's 400 meter race. Joel Conn ran a 4:23.22 mile and Chris Catton captured second place in the 1,000 meter race with a time of 2:28.63. Mike Fernbach and Matt Owen also placed in the top-20 of that even, with times of 2:36.15 and 2:36.25.
Mike Loyd qualified out of the preliminary 55 meter hurdle race with a 7.62 time. In the semi-final race, he was one tenth away from reaching the finals, running a 7.54.
In field events, Jesse Richert jumped 1.95 meters in the high jump to finish seventh in the event, while Adam Gabrault threw the weight 15.87 meters for a 15th place finish.
The Deacons compete in the ACC Tournament next weekend in Chapel Hill, NC.
