Track Finishes Well At Home Opener

Winston-Salem, NC - The Deacon track teams opened the outdoor season at home Saturday, with two athletes earning regional qualifying marks. Lindsay Neuberger set a new school record in the hammer throw, while Michelle Sikes shattered the Kentner Stadium record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Mike Loyd hurdled a qualifying mark of 14.14 in the 110 meter hurdles. The 4x100 meter relay team of Cassy Richard, Diane Anderson, Michelle Duffey and Melissa Council broke the Deacon record as well.
Sikes, who had never before run in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, earned a regional qualifying time of 10:42.16. The mark was nearly two minutes faster than the previous Kentner Stadium record (12:07.12), set by Alisha Little of Appalachian State on March 23, 2002.
Lindsay Neuberger, who owns the Deacon record in the shot put and hammer throw, broker her own hammer record, throwing a 50.45 meter performance today. She finished first in the shot put and discus events as well.
Hanna Bremler won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:16.12. Other Deacons to claim the individual race titles included Diane Anderson in the 400 meter dash, Caitlin Chrisman in the 1,500 meter run and Richards in the long jump.
Eric Seely claimed the title of the 100 meter dash, with a time of 10.74. Chris Catton won the 1,500 meter, and Mike Hauck captured the javelin throw. Mike Loyd took the 110 meter hurdles with a 14.24 regional qualifying mark.

The Deacons return to action next weekend, with the Demon Deacon Combined Events in Kentner Stadium, and the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
