Winston-Salem, NC - Freshmen Molly Kennedy and Michael Bingham stand atop the leader board after day one of the Deacon Combined Events Classic. Kennedy leads the ladies in the heptathlon, with 2,868 points, while Bingham paces the men in the decathlon with 3,769 points.
Kennedy placed first in two of the four events scored on Thursday and finished second in the others. The Nashville, Tenn., native ran the 100 meter hurdles in 15.45, just under four tenths shy of first place. She tied for the victory in the high jump, with a 1.57 meter mark, while she claimed sole possession of first place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.22. In the shot put, she finished second after an 11.17 meter throw.
Kennedy and the field of 13 other athletes, conclude heptathlon action on Friday morning. Still to come are the long jump, the javelin throw and the 800 meter race.
Bingham, who earned 2005 All-ACC heptathlon honors by finishing in third place with 5,146 points at the ACC Indoor Championship, smoked the field in the 400 meter dash with a 47.82, to vault into first place overall. He claimed the 100 meter dash race with a 10.68 and placed second in the long jump with a 6.71 meter leap. His shot put mark of 10.55 meters landed him in ninth place, while his 1.83 meter high jump height tied him for sixth place in the event.
Still to come for the men are the 110 meter hurdles, the discus throw, the pole vault, the javelin toss and the 1,500 meter race. Each of those events will take place Friday morning in Kentner Stadium.
