Tallahassee, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams wrapped up the first day of competition at the ACC Track and Field Championship on Thursday. Senior Annie Bersagel won her second ACC individual title in the 10k and freshman Michael Bingham leads the pack after day one of the decathlon events.
Adam Gabrault earned the first points of the tournament for the Deacons, with his sixth place finish in the hammer throw. Gabrault set a personal record and Deacon season best 171-08 in the event, earning the men three points.
Bingham, who earlier in the year totaled the most decathlon points in the ACC (6,778), already has 3,896 after the completion of half of the decathlon events. The Burlington, N.C., native led the field after every event, beginning with his first place finish in the 100 meter dash. Bingham placed first in the long jump, with a personal best 23-04.75. His 37-05.00 in the shot put was a personal best and he tied his record in the high jump, jumping to 6-00.00. Bingham finished first in the 400 meter race, setting a personal record and regional qualifying time of 47.13. Close behind Bingham in the race for the decathlon title is North Carolina's Rob Bates, who totaled 3,736 points on day one.
Melissa Council set a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles in the opening of the heptathlon. Her 15.20 was the best by a Deacon this season. Council also set personal records in the high jump (5-00.50) and the shot put (26-10.5). She finished second in the 200 meter dash to move into ninth place (2,830 points) overall at the halfway mark of the events.
Joining Council in the heptathlon race is fellow freshman Molly Kennedy, who stands in seventh overall through four events. Kennedy shattered her records in the high jump (5-04.25) and the shot put (37-03.00) and with 2,927 points, is within reach of the heptathlon leader Deanna Lane of Florida State (3,341 points).
Senior Annie Bersagel becomes just the third Deacon in the women's program to defend her title in the ACC Championship. One of four individual Deacon winners in the indoor and outdoor 2004 seasons, Bersagel is the only Wake Forest athlete in 2005 to capture a conference title. She claimed the top spot in the 5k during the indoor season and now owns her second 10k title in as many attempts.
Bersagel's first place, 34:24.24 finish, added to Erin Franklin's sixth place, personal best 10k time of 35:32.80, vaulted the Deacon women into fifth place (13 points) after the first day of competition at the Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla.
