Track and Field Signs Three

Winston-Salem, NC - Annie Bennett announced the signing of three women to the Wake Forest track and field and cross country programs on Wednesday. Mandy McBean, Adele Mitchell and Nicole Schappert comprise the 2005-06 women's recruiting class.
"This is certainly one of the highest quality recruiting classes that we've had so far," said director of track and field and head cross country coach Annie Bennett. "These girls will help fill some holes we have in our track and field program and will add depth to the cross country team as well."
Mandy McBean joins the 2005-06 cross country and track and field teams with outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments. The Scarborough, Ontario holds personal record times of 4:34.00 in the 1500 meter race and 9:51.40 in the 3k. She was a Toronto Catholic High School senior gold medalist in the 5k in cross country and finished as high as fourth in the Canadian Junior track championship during her junior year. McBean finished second in the 2005 National Scholastic meet in the two mile race and participated in the 2004 world junior cross country championships. She will specialize in the 3k and the 5k for the Deacons.
Adele Mitchell, a Fort Wayne, Ind., product, finished second in the 2,000m Steeplechase at the adidas Outdoor Track and Field Championship, with a time of 7:00. She was the 2004 Indiana Cross Country Champion and has run a mile in 4:52.00. Mitchell will compete in the steeplechase and the mile at Wake Forest.
Nicole Schappert, a member of the honor society at Pope John Paul II High School in Delray Beach, Fla., is a five-time state champion in the 1600m (2003, 2004), the 3200m (2003, 2004) and the 5k (2004). She will compete for three more state titles this spring. With a personal best 4:52.00 in the mile, Schappert will run the mile and the 3k for the Deacons.
