Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest political science department presented its annual awards Tuesday night. Associate Professor Helga Welsh awarded two Wake Forest track athletes, Annie Bersagel and Kayla Gassmann, with the highest departmental honors.
Bersagel received the C.H. Richards award for the most outstanding graduate in the Political Science Department. Bersagel, who last weekend picked up All-ACC honors in the 10k and 5k races, is a two-time Academic All-American, a six-time All-American and a four-time ACC individual champion. The senior from Greeley, Colo., holds the school record in the 5k and 10k events.
Gassmann received the Jack and Martha Fleer award for best honors paper in the Political Science Department. The senior from Hoxie, Kan., owns the second-best javelin throw in school history. She placed ninth at the 2004 ACC Championship in that event.
The senior duo helped lead Wake Forest to one of the most successful women's track seasons in school history. The Deacons reached as high as 15th in the national polls this season, set six NCAA qualifying marks, and broke five school records during the 2005 outdoor season.
