Winston-Salem, NC - Senior Annie Bersagel has been named a first team Academic All-America by ESPN The Magazine, announced the organization on Thursday. It is Bersagel's second Academic All-America selection, her only as a member of the first team.
During the outdoor season, the Greeley, Colo., native set a new school record and ran the then-fastest time in 2005 in the NCAA in the 10,000 meter race. Her 33:02.13 earned her ACC and NCAA Performer of the Week honors, as well as an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship, where she went on to finish sixth, her best performance in three years at Nationals. She earned All-America in the 10,000 meter event for the third straight season. She earned All-ACC honors in the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter races, finishing in second and first place, respectively in those events.
Bersagel performed well during the indoor season as well, earning All-ACC honors in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter races. She claimed the conference title in the 5,000 meter and finished second in the 3,000 meter race. She set a new school record in the 3,000 meter run at the Alex Wilson Invitational and the 5,000 meter school record with her third place finish in that event at the NCAA Championship. She was named All-America in the 5,000 meter race, her second such honor in that race.
Bersagel, a political science and economics double major, has a 3.93 cumulative grade point average. She is one of 15 student athletes on the Women's Cross Country/Track and Field Academic All-America first team. Three Atlantic Coast Athletes dot the squad, including North Carolina's Laura Gerraughty and Clemson's Gisele Oliveira. The second and third teams also have 15 members each.
